It’s Hygge Season: How to Keep Your Fluffy Throws, Rugs, and Toys Soft Wash After Wash

Washing your plush and fluffy favorites the wrong way can ruin them! Here’s how to do it right.

Faux fur and soft throws require special treatment in the wash so as not to burn their fibers.

It’s happened to me more times than I can count. I’ve purchased a beautiful soft throw from Home Goods, and I adore it. Then my dog decides she loves it too, and before you know it, it needs a serious washing.

I toss it into the washer, and then the dryer, and what comes out is just a little less soft, and somewhat thickened, version of what went in. This course of action goes on repeat for a few months before that once gorgeous throw is pre-maturely beat up and pretty “un-hygge”. This is sad, wasteful, and expensive.

To help you keep your faux fur throws, slippers, pillows and other plush goods looking fresh and feeling soft, I've put together a simple guide on how to wash them, and keep them in their best soft and pampering shape for years to come.

1. Check the Label: Before proceeding with any cleaning method, always check the care label attached to your faux fur throw. It will provide specific instructions for washing and maintenance. If the label is missing or faded, follow the general guidelines listed below.

2. Shake it Out: Begin by giving the faux fur throw a good shake outdoors. This will help remove any loose dirt, dust, or debris embedded within the fibers. Be gentle to avoid damaging the fur.

3. Spot Clean Stains: If your faux fur throw has any localized stains, use a mild detergent or stain remover suitable for delicate fabrics. Apply a small amount to the stained area and gently blot or rub with a clean, damp cloth. Remember to always test the cleaning solution on a less visible part of the throw first, to ensure it doesn't cause any discoloration or damage.

4. Choose the Right Washing Method: Depending on the size and material of your faux fur throw, you have several options to consider:

  • Hand Wash: If the throw is relatively small, it's best to hand wash using cold water and a mild detergent. Fill a basin with cold water and a small amount of detergent, then gently swish the throw around, ensuring it gets evenly soaked. Rinse thoroughly and squeeze out excess water without wringing. Finally, lay the throw flat on a clean towel to air dry.

  • Machine Wash: For larger faux fur throws that can fit in a washing machine, use the delicate or hand wash cycle with cold water. Prior to washing, place the throw inside a mesh laundry bag or pillowcase to protect it from any potential damage caused by friction during the wash. Add a mild detergent, and select a slow spin and rinse cycle. Once the wash is complete, remove the throw and reshape it while damp. Avoid using fabric softeners or bleach.

5. Drying the Throw: When it comes to drying faux fur throws, avoid direct heat or sunlight as it can cause the fur to become brittle or discolored. Instead, lay the throw flat on a clean, dry towel, and gently reshape it to its original size and form. Ensure proper air circulation in the room to aid the drying process. Patience is key during this step, as it may take some time for the throw to fully dry. Once dry, fluff the fur gently with your fingers or a soft brush.

6. Seasonal Storage: When not in use, store your faux fur throw in a clean, dry place, away from direct sunlight or excessive humidity. To prevent any moisture buildup, add a few silica gel packets or a fabric softener sheet inside the storage container. This will help maintain the throw's softness and ensure it is ready to be enjoyed in the next season.

By following these steps, you can keep your faux fur throws looking and feeling as fabulous as the day you first purchased them. Remember, proper care and maintenance will help extend the lifespan of your throws, allowing you to cuddle up in cozy comfort for years to come.
